In Zarzis, on the Tunisian coast near the Libyan border, Chemseddine Marzoug, a former fisherman who is now unemployed, has been volunteering for 10 years to give those who have drowned in the Mediterranean a burial in the sand. As volunteers for the Tunisian Red Crescent, Chemseddine and his colleague Mohamed Trabelsi have been burying the bodies of migrants found at sea or washed up on beaches in southern Tunisia for the past 10 years in a makeshift cemetery set up at a municipal landfill. This spring, the death toll has been very high—27 bodies were recovered last month.
