At the Ghriba Synagogue in Hara Sghira, the first day of the pilgrimage is a bustling affair, filled with prayers, the placing of eggs bearing wishes in the grotto, donations, and auctions to benefit the Jewish community of Djerba. A visit to the heart of the caracansérail of Hassen Chalghoumi, the Tunisian-born Imam of Drancy, and Marek Halter, a renowned Jewish writer. Both delivered speeches calling for peace and interfaith harmony.
